Όλα κυλούσαν αρμονικά στη ζωή της Αγγελικής Δελλή το φθινόπωρο του 1939. Σε λίγες μέρες θα γνώριζε την ευτυχία στο πλευρό του αρραβωνιαστικού της, Απόστολου Πετρόπουλου αφού θα ανέβαιναν μαζί τα σκαλιά της εκκλησίας. Ένα ήρεμο κυριακάτικο απόγευμα όμως, την περίμενε μια δυσάρεστη έκπληξη. Μέσω ενός ανώνυμου γράμματος, την ενημέρωναν πως ο Απόστολος την απατούσε. Βλέποντάς την να φτάνει στο ζενίθ της απελπισίας, ο θείος Οδυσσέας, βρίσκει έναν έξυπνο αστυνομικό, τον Πέτρο Μανιά και του ζητά να ψάξει στοιχεία για να δουν αν όντως ο αρραβωνιαστικός της Αγγελικής έχει άλλη.
