Εμπνευσμένη από την ταινία του Wolfgang Petersen και το μυθιστόρημα του Lothar-Günther Buchheim, η σειρά γυρίστηκε σε πολλές ευρωπαϊκές τοποθεσίες. Η πρώτη σεζόν ανοίγει το 1942 στην κατεχόμενη Γαλλία και ακολουθεί το ταξίδι του γερμανικού υποβρυχίου U-612 στο πρώτο του ταξίδι. Ακολουθεί επίσης τα γεγονότα στη γη και τις προσπάθειες της Γαλλικής αντίστασης. Τo Das Boot είναι sequel του (1981).
