Ihmisten ja cylonien välinen intergalaktinen sota näyttää lähenevän loppuaan. Kahdentoista ihmisten asuttaman siirtokunnan johtajat haluavat tehdä rauhan verivihollistensa, robottimaisten cylonien kanssa. Toiveet rauhasta kuitenkin kuolevat katkerasti liekkien ja hävityksen keskelle: kunnianhimoisen nousukkaan petoksen johdosta ihmiskunta on avuton cylonien äkisti hyökätessä ihmisten planeetoille. Ihmiset pakenevat avaruuden kylmään syliin käyttäen apunaan kaikkia mahdollisia aluksia. Heidän ainoana suojanaan on taisteluplaneetta Galactica, neuvokkaan komentaja Adaman johtama valtava avaruushävittäjä. Ihmiskunnan rippeet lähtevät epätoivoiselle vaellukselle halki tuntemattomien tähtien heidän ainoa toivonsa on löytää myyttinen 13. siirtokunta, legendaarinen Maa-planeetta. Mutta armottomat cylonit ovat alati heidän kannoillaan.
