Assegnato a una parrocchia sarda, piccola e in rovina, don Paolo Salinas arriva in paese mentre divampa la rivalità tra le famiglie Barras e Corrain. Un parente dei Corrain viene ucciso e, visto che la polizia non sembra poter fare nulla, don Paolo diventa mediatore tra le due famiglie per smascherare l'assassino e riportare la pace in paese. Un film cupo e drammatico, tratto dal romanzo "La madre" di Grazia Deledda e molto rimaneggiato da Suso Cecchi D'Amico, Giuseppe Mangione e dallo stesso Monicelli, realizzato benino da un regista specializzato in commedie.
