1979年某日，北京南城某个普通的四合院内，丧偶的酱菜厂女工唐玉秀（闫妮）与离异的消防员程大河（周小斌）结为半路夫妻。之前对于这门婚事，玉秀儿子方海（商子见）认为程家是看重父亲留下的四合院，极力反对，而程母（宫景华）及大河弟弟小林（佟悦）的心思也的确被他猜中。大河女儿媛媛（代乐乐）则像方海仇视大河一样，不拿正眼瞧玉秀。 婚后玉秀及大河将夫妻角色摆在最后，协力为一大家人顾后忙前，媛媛及方海渐渐感动于他们的良苦用心。其后，小林在哥嫂的帮忙下，迎娶爱恋许久的莉莉（姚晨）；媛媛与忠厚老实的读书人路南（喻恩泰）成亲；方海得生意人谢伯达（洪剑涛）照顾有了事业，并与青梅竹马的郭小卓（倪虹洁）确定关系；玉秀及大河更是有了自己的孩子程军（董博文）。 大家庭摩擦虽不断，却也慢慢奏出和谐曲。没料想，几年后玉秀及大河照顾有加的小林两口子，竟会拿房子及程军同他们说事。
