1976年元旦，毛泽东发表了新年献词，周恩来回忆起与毛泽东在一起的情景。周恩来要邓颖超在他去世后搬出西花厅，因为那是国家给他工作的地方。周恩来就没能陪邓颖超回老家安度晚年表达了歉意，并承诺如果有下辈子，他们还在一起做夫妻。周恩来一直处于昏迷状态，来看望他的聂荣臻试图唤醒他，但是没有任何反应，聂荣臻含泪给周恩来敬了一个军礼。周恩来在弥留之际，用微弱的气息同邓颖超一起唱起了《国际歌》。歌声中，周恩来回忆起革命时期的峥嵘岁月，直至安详地闭上了眼睛。1976年1月8日，周恩来逝世。朱德、习仲勋、耿飚、黄镇、常媛等人在得知周恩来去世的消息后都悲痛欲绝。毛泽东此时也疾病缠身，在身边工作人员的搀扶下，他悲痛不已、泪流不止。1976年1月15日，周恩来追悼大会在人民大会堂举行，邓小平代表中共中央、国务院致悼词。联合国降半旗，哀悼中华人民共和国总理周恩来。
